Gail

Age: 44

Lost: 79 pounds

Completed Program: December 2005

I had been overweight for my entire life. Actually, I lost track of my weight at one time because my scale just would not even go up that high - I was likely around 400 pounds! Given my family history of obesity and heart disease, I knew that unless I took action soon, my time here would be limited.

Initially, I took a different route regarding my weight loss, consulting with my doctor regarding Gastric Bypass surgery. I ended up having the surgery and the good news is that I lost about 130 pounds. Unfortunately, I didn't receive the proper education on how to eat properly. I continued to make poor food choices and even learned how to overeat on a stapled stomach. Finally, I realized that I needed help and a good friend encouraged me to try 20/20 Lifestyles.

It didn't take long for me to realize that weight loss surgery is not the answer. The real solution is making healthy food choices, working out, and being educated about my overall health and well-being.

I was surprised that the most challenging component of the program was not the diet; it was actually the process of dealing with my emotions. In the past, I would turn to food to stifle my feelings and seeing a therapist allowed another outlet for these emotions. To this day, I continue to participate in therapy to keep me grounded and proactive.

The most enjoyable aspect of the program was exercising. My goal is to continue to stay active for the rest of my life. I work out almost every day and even see a marathon in my future.

Another rewarding part of the program was the weekly weigh-ins. I really looked forward to stepping on the scale each week. It was immensely gratifying and almost a "high" every time I saw the pounds slip away. Here are some of my most gratifying accomplishments:

  • Reduction in weight - It is so gratifying to have a "1" as a first digit in my weight, since I was at almost 400 pounds before. I still have to pinch myself to believe it -- and trust me, there is much less to pinch!
  • Reduction in stress - Work/life balance is now a priority.
  • Productivity at work - My work effectiveness has tripled. I was even awarded an incentive vacation at work because of my contributions and performance.

The program also had a profound impact on my career. I am going into the health care field, with an emphasis on health care administration. Just as the 20/20 Lifestyles team helped to change my life, I want to motivate others to live a healthier lifestyle.

I have gone from being over 400 pounds to a confident woman who is actually considered "slim". People who I haven't seen for years don't even recognize me now! I've started a new career in the healthcare field to motivate and inspire others to live a healthier lifestyle.
